Aby bolo možné experimenty kontrolovať a zabrániť nechcenému transferu génov do prírody, musia byť stromy pred vysadením neplodné. „Sterilné“ stromy sú hlavnou požiadavkou Spolkového výskumného ústavu lesného hospodárstva.

Forests are valuable eco systems and as replenish able raw material, wood has a very important market value. Technology is a key player in the economic and ecologically sound harvesting of wood. In the forests of southern Sweden they use felling machines, which bear some resemblance to giant insects, I the name of ecological forestry. Like creature on stilts, these six-legged vehicles move through the forests without damaging the undergrowth. A computer laser selects and measures the tree to be felled and can calculate how the mass of wood is to be transported out of the forest. Cellulose fibres are not only of interest in the world of wood manufacture, but also that of genetic technology. All over the world scientists are working feverishly to come up with new ways of genetically manipulating trees. The wood industry has long dreamed of being able to reduce the lignin content in trees. The lignin fibres act like blue between the cellulose cells, making trees so stable. But it creates massive problems for the manufacturers of pulp and paper, who have to use chemicals and high energy to remove the lignin from wood. The danger with genetically manipulated trees is connected to their longevity. Trees have a much longer lasting influence on the environment than corn or other annual plants. And so far nobody knows if the newly introduced genes are even capable of staying stable over a longer period of time. In order to be able to control the experiments and to avoid an unwanted genetic transfer with the environment, the trees have to be made infertile before they are planted as Christmas approaches Hitech reports on „Off the Peg Trees“. This documentary explores how technology is being made to fit the needs of nature and how, on the other hand, technology and science are trying to change nature to suit their needs and those of business.
